The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority continues to prove itself as the authority for mobility in Miami-Dade County by making it easier for you to Drive the Five. MDX is a state-sanctioned and locally administered agency tasked with easing traffic congestion on some of South Florida's busiest roadways.

While it is impossible to solve Miami-Dade County's traffic congestion overnight, MDX has a plan that will take Miami-Dade County into the future with a modern and effective roadway system that aims to meet the county's growing needs. In order to do that, MDX has created a 20-year, $2.75 billion Master Transportation Plan to bring major expressway innovations to South Florida. In addition, a Five-Year Work Program has been created to begin delivering these state-of-the-art technologies that will make your commute easier.

These innovations include the SunPass Electronic Toll Collection system that will help alleviate traffic congestion at toll collection booths. By using a SunPass transponder, your toll payment is automatically deducted from a pre-paid account so there is no need to stop to pay a toll. With Open Road Tolling, the future of Electronic Toll Collections in South Florida, there is no need to even slow down to pay a toll. MDX is already moving into the future of mobility with the high speed Electronic Toll Collection on SR 836 eastbound, also known as the Wing, which is the first of its kind for any urban setting in the state of Florida.

When you Drive the Five, MDX wants to make sure you have access to up-to-date technology that will make your ride easier. That is why MDX is working to bring you Managed Lanes, expressway travel lanes that will guarantee the free-flow of traffic for drivers wanting to travel on less congested roadways. Traffic will ideally flow between 45 and 55 miles per hour and will serve as an alternative, or "congestion insurance" for drivers who need to bypass heavy traffic. MDX is also adding on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), a network of fiber-optic cables, cameras and detectors along MDX roadways that will also help make your ride just a little bit easier. This integrated network will transmit traffic crashes, vehicle breakdowns and traffic delays in real-time to traffic operation centers, law enforcement officers and YOU!

On any given day, more than half a million travelers use MDX expressways. That is why MDX is dedicated to Moving Miami-Dade by working to ease traffic gridlock for you.

MDX Future Projects Forum – Visioning / Financing Workshop - September 25, 2007
Recently, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority held a workshop to provide a glimpse of what the Miami Dade county transportation infrastructure may look like in the future. MDX invites you to view the information and the maps that were presented at the workshop.
